Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (S.A.R.S.)

S.A.R.S. is a viral respiratory illness that was first reported in Asia in February 2003. Over the next few months the illness was reported in over two dozen countries throughout the world. The outbreak has been contained however it is possible the disease could re-emerge. There were 192 cases of S.A.R.S. reported in the United States with zero fatalities.

Symptoms

S.A.R.S. begins with a high fever. It may also include a headache and body aches with some people experiencing mild respiratory discomfort at the outset. After 2 - 7 days patients may develop a dry cough and diarrhea. Most patients go on to develop pneumonia.

How S.A.R.S. Spreads

It spreads the same way as the common cold, through coughs, sneezes, kissing and even by touching surfaces that were contaminated with respiratory droplets left by an infected person.
