Potassium Iodide (KI)

All persons living and working within the 10 mile EPZ had the opportunity to obtain Potassium Iodide (KI) from the PA Department of Health. Potassium Iodide is a non-perscription drug which can also be purchased at any pharmacy.

Potassium Iodide (KI) will not be issued to the general public by Emergency Management during a nuclear power plant emergency.

Potassium Iodide fills up the thyroid gland reducing the chance that radioactive iodide will enter and damage it. "KI"is not an anti-radiation pill

Persons allergic to shell fish should not take KI. If you have a severe reaction to KI immediately discontinue using it and contact a doctor or public health authority for instructions.

If an emergency is declared at the S.S.E.S. Nuclear Power Plant do not automatically take KI.

"KI" is only to be taken when you've been instructed to do so by the Governor or Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

An official announcement advising emergency responders, special populations and the general public to take KI will be preceded by the sounding of the sirens in the EPZ, alerting people to tune into their local EAS radio or TV station for further information.

Follow the instructions given by the Secretary of the Department of Health for taking KI. Do not assume more is better. Taking more than one pill in a 24 hour period could cause an adverse reaction.
