Fire Safety Tips & Facts
- Properly install a smoke detector, on each level
of your home.
- Clean and test all smoke detectors once a month.
- Change all batteries at least once a year.
- Replace smoke detectors at least every 10 years.
- At the change of each season perform a home fire
safety inspection. A sample check list can be found
in the Family Plan Template.
- During a fire if smoke conditions are heavy, crawl
because if any air is available it will be located
close to the floor.
- If a door is hot don't open it, escape through a
window.
- If your clothing ever catches fire; stop, drop and
roll to smother the flames, don't run.
- If a small fire is discovered immediately alert
all occupants and have them vacate the building. Call
or assign someone to call 911 before an attempt is
made to extinguish the fire.
- Designate a family meeting place on the exterior
of the building at a safe distance from the structure.
From this location assign someone to go to a neighbor
and call 911.
- Never go back into a burning building.
- Prepare a personal property inventory and keep it
in a safe location (like a safety deposit box) along
with your insurance policy.
